It is hard but feels good to touch. I love the color; it looks so cute. Fits perfectly to my Mcair 11 inch. It does not cover the apple symbol. Keyboard cover is very pretty too. I am not sure about protection but I like it. I already have a carrying case so don't worry about protection while I carry it.
